Seven students experienced the distinct honor to represent their school and state in a worldwide competition.

Tanner Green, Conner Kersey, Jake Taylor, Tyler Thomas, Coleman Warren, Allison Williams, and Caleb Williams traveled to Anaheim, California in late April for the international DECA competition.

“International was beyond difficult, many schools from around the world put in thousands upon thousands of hours into building their company. They had four years whereas we had one. But it was a learning experience meeting incredible people and building relationships with future business partners for later in life,” said Tyler Thomas, junior.

With club sponsor Meagan Disney out on maternity leave, Junior Bank Board sponsor Mandi Collyar helped coordinate the group’s trip.

“Students competed in 2 group competitions and 1 individual. Conner, Jake, and Tyler competed in Innovation Plan. Tanner, Coleman, and Caleb competed in Franchise Business Plan. Allison competed in Start Up Business Plan,” said Collyar.

Students participating in this competition previously attended the state DECA contest.

“[We] put in a lot of time and effort into building our company, then competed at a state-wide level against schools from around Arkansas, eventually earning our way to an international wide competition,” said Thomas.

At this international competition, the students’ goal in the Innovation Plan competition was to make their own business or company and give a sales pitch trying to sell business to potential investors from around the world.

“[I met] people from every single state and even different countries, including Canada, South Korea, and China,” said Thomas.

Although the groups did not finish with any recognition because only the top 2 were recognized in each event, the entire event wasn’t all work.

“We explored the Hollywood sign, Griffith Observatory, Hollywood Boulevard, and Rodeo Drive,” said Thomas.

Reflecting on the experience gave Thomas a genuine appreciation for the support the group gained enabling them to travel to the competition.

“The event as a whole was an incredible opportunity that only a few get to witness in their high school or life. I highly appreciate any supporters we had plus any people who helped us along the way. Thank you,” said Thomas.
